about

Music For A Moody Day is Mr. Alfa's (aka Alfa Kay) first full-length collection of Ambient piano and orchestral pieces.

‘Music For A Moody Day’
Mr Alfa

From the outset of ‘Insides’ Erik Satie like cerebral piano and double bass hypnotism Mr Alfa’s ‘Music For A Moody Day’ is a totally immersive and highly rewarding listening experience expertly mining the ever evolving and rich texture of past ambient explorers, this is never more evident than on ‘In And Out’ where he appears to draw upon Bowie and Eno’s seminal back catalogue, more specifically ‘Low’, all deep bass keys and ethereal swathes of sound touch upon the liminal borders appearing to soundtrack an out of body experience that is heart breaking in its beautiful simplicity and really rather special indeed. ‘Moody Day’ up’s the tempo somewhat with a fuselage of cellos leading towards a neoclassical tonal resonance that is redolent of Debussy’s more esoteric experiments. ‘Cherry Blossom’ riffs upon a similar classical theme adding to the seamlessly cohesive feel while ‘I’m Hypnotised By Your Body’ has an urgency and directive that calls to mind John Barry’s wider cinematic incursions. By adding a bubbling electronic pulse and Moog synthesiser along with the metronomic drum beat Mr Alfa elevates what could be an otherwise generic concept album into something all-together more rewarding. As a producer he is attuned to be aware that less if often more and here the directness and understated simplicity of its execution is pure genius. ‘Ordinary Day’, while slight in comparison, is actually one of the strongest pieces here, managing to take a generic house-y chord sequence and distilling it to its perfect essence by slowing the tempo and turning the ambience up to eleven sadness never sounded so lovely. ‘First Light’ is an exercise in ambient drone phonetics that is as poet as it is seductive. It ends with the breezy ‘Catch The Wave’, a fierce soundtrack of bohemian beat indulgence that is a fitting end to this remarkable record.
